Transfer of Culture:
Traditionally Indigenous cultures have been passed down through oral means from generation to generation. Artwork, ceremonies and The Dreaming are important ways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders to pass on knowledge and culture to younger generations.
Language plays a major role in this transfer of knowledge and culture. Within Australia there are hundreds of Indigenous dialects. Unfortunately many of these dialects have disappeared due to European intervention.
It is generally understood in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture that not all information is shared with everyone. Whether it is considered irrelevant or inappropriate it is widely accepted that information will be shared when and if the time is appropriate.
