The Dreaming:
Formerly known as “The Dreamtime” it is now referred to as ‘The Dreaming’ as this term acknowledges the importance the present and future, as well as the past. The Dreaming includes stories of creation passed down from the ancestors. It encompasses how the world we live in came to be and how everything on earth is related to the ancestral spirits and their creations. The Dreaming underpins an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons connection to the land and to other people. There are many famous Dreaming stories, including ‘The Rainbow Serpent’ and ‘How the Birds got Their Colours’. When using these stories in a classroom setting it is important the students understand the context of the story and its relation to Australia in the 21st Century.
