Art, Music and Dance:
Indigenous art is very intricate, detailed and complex. It tells the story and vision of the artist. Contrary to popular misconceptions, Aboriginal artwork and techniques are more than just ‘dot paintings’. In recent years Indigenous artists have experimented with colour and patterns whilst still remaining connected to their origins.
Music and dance both play important roles in Indigenous culture, both traditional and contemporary. They serve as entertainment and important celebrations. In traditional societies they are used to mark important rituals in a person’s life or can be related to nature. In contemporary societies they can be used as a tool to assist in educating non-Indigenous people about the Indigenous cultures or social issues experienced by Indigenous people. Both music and dance are sacred times in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.
